Kigali, Rwanda and San Francisco, USA – 17 February 2026 — Bio Usawa proudly celebrates Dr. Fidel Rubagumya, a member of our Scientific Advisory Board, on the publication of his new book, Beyond Cancer — a deeply personal and profoundly human reflection on the realities of cancer care in Rwanda and across Africa.
Dr. Rubagumya serves as a consultant clinical and radiation oncologist at the Rwanda Cancer Centre within Rwanda Military Referral and Teaching Hospital. He is also a senior lecturer and Program Director of the Medical Oncology Fellowship at the University of Rwanda. Over the years, he has become one of the leading voices in cancer care delivery, health systems research, and policy on the continent.
Yet Beyond Cancer is not a clinical textbook. It is a testament.
In the book, Dr. Rubagumya reflects on the emotional weight oncologists carry; from the late diagnoses, the families who travel long distances for care, the quiet suffering behind hospital doors, and the resilience of patients who endure more than most of us can imagine. He writes not only as a physician, but as a son who lost his mother to cancer at the age of 11 — an experience that ultimately shaped his calling to oncology.
The book weaves together clinical experience, patient testimonies, and family narratives, including his own sister’s account of their mother’s illness. It is a powerful reminder that cancer is never just a disease of cells; it is a disease that touches households, livelihoods, and futures.
Reflecting on why he wrote the book, Dr. Rubagumya shares: “Cancer does not only attack the body; it tests the strength of families, the resilience of health systems, and the compassion of caregivers. I wrote ‘Beyond Cancer’ so that the stories of patients can be heard, understood, and remembered.”
Sustainable access to essential biologics in Africa requires not only scientific innovation, but courageous clinical leadership. Dr. Rubagumya embodies both. His voice strengthens Bio Usawa’s work to ensure that no patient is denied life-saving treatment simply because of geography or cost.
We congratulate Dr. Fidel Rubagumya on this remarkable achievement and are honored to count him among the leaders guiding Bio Usawa’s scientific vision.
