Bio Usawa, Inc. (BUI) CEO, Dr. Menghis Bairu, recently visited the Tatu City Special Economic Zones (SEZ) located on a 5,000-acre site in Kiambu County, Kenya. Privately developed and operated, the SEZ is a multi-sector community composed of Industrial Parks, Science and Technology Parks, and Business Parks that are regulated by the Kenyan government’s SEZ Authority.
The SEZ has been identified as one of the flagship projects under the Economic Pillar of the Kenya Vision 2030 that includes a Science and Technology Park that will facilitate science, technology and innovation.
The SEZ’s Founder and CEO Stephen Jennings, led the informative visit, which also included a tour of the planned residential area under construction that is expected to accommodate more than 150,000 residents. Schools and businesses are already open at Tatu City.
Tatu City was the SEZ selected by Moderna for their biotech manufacturing plant until the company changed its direction as a result of a business decision.
Bio Usawa is most grateful for the warm welcome and the opportunity to learn more about this well designed and impressive opportunity to bring Science, Technology and Innovation together in a vibrant community that will have access to funding sources from US and European entities. The SEZ is a clear example of Kenya’s ongoing leadership in – and commitment to- advancing industrial, technological and scientific excellence.
