When a medicine is the only intervention that can prevent blindness, halt autoimmune destruction, or turn a fatal cancer into a manageable disease, calling it a luxury is not just inaccurate, it is dangerous.
For decades, the term essential medicines has been widely misunderstood. Too often, it is narrowly interpreted to mean medicines that are simple, inexpensive, or limited to small-molecule drugs. This misconception has real consequences, especially for patients living with severe, life-threatening, or life-altering diseases.
It is time to be unequivocal: monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are essential medicines.
